Life skills are safety skills for our autistic kids. Money is no different. Actually, I would say that teaching our kids about money and how to use it is a crucial life skill. Someday, they will be without you. Not everyone will have their best interests at heart. Being swindled out of their money is probably the most likely scenario for being taken advantage of.
Teach your kids how to handle cash as well as know what each denomination adds up to. Teach them how to use debit/credit cards. Teach them how to use self checkout as well as a how to interact with a cashier. Teach them how to read their receipt and to self advocate if it’s wrong.
Start small by teaching them coins. Print, laminate, then have your child sort either real coins or fake ones for practice. When you approach math as a different language you will know that lots and lots of repetitive, hands on practice for our kids who think in pictures will make learning fun!
