One of the best things to teach in geography is map skills. Lots of schools and even parents teach their learners all about technology. How to put the address in GPS and respond to the directions are great skills until there is no cell reception in the area or your phone dies.

Map skills aren’t hard to teach but you must be purposeful about them. It’s easy to dismiss map skills when you don’t use them regularly but it’s an important skill to have in your child’s back pocket. Life skills are safety skills is my motto and reading a map is no exception.

Since we live in rural Arizona, having no cell service is a constant problem. I was so glad that my teenager knew how to read a map when she drove herself home from dance and there was a serious traffic accident blocking the main road into our town. Having a map in her car and knowing how to read it meant that she didn’t need to stop anywhere and ask a stranger for help. I was extremely thankful at that moment that we had taught map skills all these years.
