An important part of any at home occupational therapy program is scissor skills. Scissor skills help with a variety of skills and neural pathways. Doing fun activities like this Fall Cutting Practice is one way to get this accomplished.
These fall cutting practice sheets are a fun and focused way to work on cutting skills. You could easily let your child just randomly cut paper. That will cover most of the benefits of cutting practice. Teaching them how to cut on lines and in circles also helps all of the items on the list like visual perception. Why not get all the benefits out of the activity that you can?
Important caveat here. Take it from my experience to get the correct scissors. If your child is left handed, they need left handed or ambidextrous scissors. (Sorry Madison). If you don’t yet know your child’s preferred hand, get ambidextrous scissors. You don’t want to frustrate them further by asking them to cut things with scissors they can’t work.
Why are scissor skills important?
Scissor skills build hand strength as well as other skills. Hand strength is important for things like pencil grip, drawing, handwriting, brushing their teeth, getting dressed, etc. Scissor skills are important to future success. Your child may have a hard time with this if their hand is really weak. Keep building hand strength in other ways as you work on scissor cutting.
How does cutting help fine motor skills?
We already know it builds hand strength. It also helps with concentration and attention to detail. Don’t get so focused on fine motor that you overlook other skills.
