Children with autism need to be taught what to do in an emergency just like typical kids.  The difference is that you not only need to go over the lessons repetitively but also teach them what emergency workers look like.

If our kids with autism don’t know what the emergency workers look like, they will be more prone to run away when they need help the most. You have to take the time to teach this in addition to practicing what to do. Think of it as a safety issue.

We all know that practice makes perfect. This 10 page packet will teach not only what to do when you need help but also familiarize your child with who to look for and what they do. Use this emergency packet to jumpstart role play, visiting the various departments, as well as learning what to do.

Repetition, repetition, repetition. Our kids with autism need to constantly refresh their knowledge to keep it in their working memory. Even if you have gone over these lessons already, this emergency packet is a fantastic way to refresh their memory.

Your child will not only learn what the emergency worker does what but also some common items they would wear or have on when they arrive. I highly suggest taking the time to make a trip to the police, fire and EMT department. It’s a great way to cement the lesson.
