Ahh, potty training. The nemesis of all parents but especially, autism parents. These potty training charts will make it fun even if it’s not easy.

Potty training your autistic child will be a lesson in futility if your child is not developmentally ready. I know it’s hard to have an about to start kindergarten or older child still in pull ups. If your child does not have the executive functioning skills needed yet, you’re wasting everyone’s time.

Am I saying you shouldn’t try? Not at all. Life skills are safety skills for our kids. The more they can do for themselves, the safer they are when they are away from you. Hygiene skills are imperative to their safety.

Potty training is one of those skills that you should work on until your child achieves it BUT they have to be ready. Hang in there and know that it will be time well spent.
