Don’t overwhelm yourself trying to teach everything in high school. Hire out the difficult subjects like math using an online program.
There is only so much of you to go around. You have to navigate autism, therapies, your house, your family, and homeschooling. Seriously, there is only so much one mom can do in a day. I count hiring out subjects that are hard for me as self care.
Math is not a subject that comes easily to me. I took Algebra 1 all four years of high school. Math comes easily to Michael but we homeschool while he works. No one wants to teach math on their day off. Enter Teaching Textbooks.
Online math programs are easy to find. We’ve tried them all. Go at your own pace, live teaching, you name it. The one that has worked for all my kids from 3rd grade to high school is Teaching Textbooks.
Hiring out high school math means I have the bandwidth to be a good mom to my teens. The teenage years are my favorite parenting season but they are also hard years. Your relationship is evolving. You’re trying to teach them independence and a good work ethic. Making them responsible for their lessons achieves this goal.
Teaching Textbooks is my choice for my visual learners. We’ve done all the high school math programs from Algebra 1 to Pre Calc. My dyslexic student has used it. My dyscalculic student has used it. My autistic student has used it. For the college bound one, he excelled in his math classes in college.
The lessons are taught in the program. Review problems are done. Then actual problems are completed. The only time the kids need me is when I need to reset the lesson because the scored less than 80%. That’s the rule here in Autismland. We teach to mastery here and 80% achieves that goal.
What you should know is that Teaching Textbooks is spiral based meaning it builds on each lesson. I would recommend that in order to avoid gaps that you stick with the same program through the high school years. Now is not the time to jump from program to program.
I love that it’s app based so they can do it on their iPads or even their phones. I can see their progress in the parent portal. There is even a tutoring hotline for if they get stuck. I have never used it because I have my own personal tutor. He’s super sexy too ( it’s my husband in case you’re wondering).
Don’t feel bad for not teaching everything. Your relationship with your child is far more important than any academics including high school math. Use your time and energy wisely.
