The classic tale of Rapunzel comes to life!

Rapunzel…the well-known story, retold by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. The Grimm version is much more child friendly than the original version for sure. Imagination at work! Study, learn and create with this classic fairytale.

The act of sitting with your child, taking time to read, create and assemble this craft together is such a positive episodic memory in their learning journey. Young learners will read aloud, complete vocabulary and anagram activities. Finally, they will create a
wonderful 3D pop-up scene of Rapunzel in the tower. This prop can be used again and again to retell the story.

It’s a perfect activity to practice teamwork as well as work on the master/apprentice relationship with your child. Play is learning.

What is the moral of Rapunzel?

The moral of the story is that you can’t shelter your children away from the perceived evils of the world. You have to let them live and learn while you can still guide them.

What is the Grimm Brothers version of the story?

The Brothers Grimm took many old fairy tales and Christianized them. The original story of Rapunzel was written by Friedrich Schulz in 1790. In that version, Rapunzel is impregnated by the boyfriend and is banished to the desert to give birth alone. Neither version is close to what Disney came up with in the movie Tangled.

Directions For Making The Rapunzel Tower

  • Fold the mountain landscape scene sheet (colored side outward) in half, along the solid middle line. To make the fold crisp and sharp, use the flat end of your scissors or a butter knife to flatten it.
  • Cut along the dotted lines on each side of the rectangle. Only cut from the fold up to the end of each dotted line.
  • Fold and crease the rectangle shape upward, along the other solid lines.
  • Now fold the entire sheet inward, pulling the rectangle outwards, forming even angles. It will look like a tall 3D shelf
  • Cut out the trees, stone tower, tower roof, Rapunzel, prince, and horse (including the bottom tabs). Cut the shapes carefully, but it’s ok if they’re not exact! Your craft will still look great!
  • Fold the top edge of the sheet inward, along the solid blue line to form a little shelf for Rapunzel. Use the flat end of your scissors or a butter knife to flatten it.
  • Apply glue to the bottom, front part of the 3D shelf. Adhere the trees to this flat side. (see photos)
glue stick and tower craft
  • Fold the bottom of the tower backwards, along the dotted line to form a bottom tab.
  • Glue this bottom tab to the grassy area of the scene, marked “tower bottom”. Also, glue the roof of the tower to the top. Allow everything to dry for a few minutes.
  • Next, cut along the white dotted line of Rapunzel. Also, fold the bottom part of her body backwards.(see photos)

  • Place Rapunzel in the tower window, clipping her body over the edge. Glue the back folded part of her body to the top of the shelf of your folded scene. This is what holds the tower upright. Carefully curve and curl her hair so that it lands on the grass gracefully.

You may need to experiment with the position of the tower and Rapunzel.
Now you can tell the story of “Rapunzel” over and over again. Have fun!
