Civil Air Patrol Partners with Homeschoolers

I wrote a post a couple of years ago about the Civil Air Patrol and homeschooling.

CAP is a fantastic junior military program for students ages 13+ interested in possibly going into the service after high school. I received an email this week from the Director of Aerospace Education, Washington State Wing of CAP explaining how they are partnering with homeschoolers.

I recently discovered your great blog about the Homeschooler (and their parents) and the Civil Air Patrol Cadet program. I grew up in the 1950s-60s as the son of a Air Force pilot. We moved around a lot and wished that I would have been homeschooled. Long story short, not only was a CAP cadet in high school, I also re-joined CAP after retiring from the Boeing Company here in Washington State. 

I now serve as the Director of Aerospace Education and assist the 28 Washington Squadrons with their education program. I just wanted to let you know that the National CAP headquarters has responded to the Homeschoolers by appointing a high level staff person to coordinate with homeschooling organizations. And please let me know if I can be of assistance to other homeschooling parents understand CAP, visit a local squadron, etc. And again, thanks for your article!

My initial CAP squadron after I retired in the Seattle area must of had at least 30% of its 42 cadets come from homeschooling parents! And several parents also joined! It was truly a “Win-Win” effort!
Do you still live in Eastern Washington State, if so we just had a new squadron form in Deer Park, added to the “older’ squadrons in Spokane (they have a geat female officer now serving as the commander there), and one at Fairchild AFB . There are now 28 squadrons scattered around the state (on the CAP Wing’s webpage, there is a easy to use squadron locator see it at: http://www.wawg.cap.gov/resources/find-your-local-unit
Oh, one more thing, any home schooling parent can also sign up as an Aerospace Education Member, just like a classroom teacher or community librarian, etc. These AEMs have FREE access to all the CAP aerospace curriculum (K-12) and the great hands-on curriculum in the Aerospace Education Excellence series and the new STEM Kits, see this webpage for additional information on these topics at: http://ae.capmembers.com/become_a_member/educators/ or just send an email to me. 🙂

If you’re a homeschooling family (or even if you’re NOT homeschooling) with kids interested in the Air Force, aerospace, or even just science in general, Civil Air Patrol is a GREAT way for them to explore the field without making a life-altering decision first! The experience and knowledge they gain through CAP  will carry over into other career areas as well.
