I waited to write this so I could announce that we did all of our planned schoolwork this week! We even missed Monday as we hung out at Nana’s house all day. I did make some minor tweaks to our schedule in that Friday has become our catch up day among other things. Also on Friday, we do our art and composer study and play math and phonics games.
In Bible, both children are working on their Awana books. We only have a few weeks left before awards and we need to catch up in history. They are also doing coloring pages for the stories that we have already done for their Bible notebooks. When we get to Abram in our history book then we will pick up our actual Bible lessons. That should happen about the same time as Awana ends. I love it when a plan comes together.
Logan is working in his Singapore Math book. I purposely picked one that starts easy and will make him feel competent. Funny thing is that I didn’t realize that there would be so much writing involved in it. He has to write the numbers out in words in some spots. There was some initial resistance but once I showed him how to look at the other pages for the answers, he was ok. He can do it no problem. He just feels so incompetent in it. So we are working on that.
Madison learned the numbers 13- 20 this week and continues to work on addition. Just like Logan, math comes easily to her.
For narration, Logan finished reading Little House in the Big Woods. He also read the Velveteen Rabbit and The Emperor’s New Clothes. He has gotten the hang of narration. A cool moment came when he narrated the Emperor’s New Clothes to Michael. The story ends with the Emperor realizing that he is naked. Michael didn’t realize this so he asked Logan what came next. Logan told him what he thought the emperor would do. He totally had the emperor’s perspective. That is a major achievement in our RDI journey. (FYI Logan thinks the emperor would be embarrassed and cover himself up).
Madison continues to read in her phonics readers. We go over her sight words daily and she is turning into quite the little reader. If I could convince her that she can blend the words herself then she would be off. We were blessed with a Hooked on Phonics set this week so we will begin that next week. She is very excited to start the series!
The children continue with their family history pages in history. If you are related to us then expect a phone call asking questions. They are enjoying learning about where other family members grew up. Next week, we will begin cave men and continue family history.
We are putting up our solar system in Logan’s room for science. We made our astronomy notebooks and learned about Copernicus and Galileo. Next week, we begin the sun.
For art , we are learning about some ways that artists draw play. For music, we have begun learning about Beethoven. I picked him because I already had a cd. Another plan that fell in my lap. 🙂
For nature, we are working on updating our butterfly garden. So far, we have seen the monarchs come back and a Queen Anne. Logan is helping to decide what else to plant while Madison and Michael are working on a water feature.
Well, that’s our week. I didn’t think that we did that much but we certainly did alot now that I wrote about it. Next week, I am adding RDI to Logan’s school schedule so look for the updates on that. Have a great weekend!
