Making homeschool fun is always at the top of everyone’s list. Finding easy to do experiments that take minimal prep and aren’t outrageously expensive is a whole other ball game. I know how that feels and am here to share our favorite fall experiment, pumpkin volcano. The only thing I needed to buy was a pumpkin.
Ingredients for your pumpkin volcano
- 1 cup white vinegar
- ¼ cup baking soda
- Food coloring, if desired
- 1 small pumpkin
- You will also need:
- Melon baller
- Sharp knife

Directions for your pumpkin volcano
Using a sharp knife, remove the stem from the pumpkin.
With a melon baller, remove the seeds from the pumpkin without removing the bottom so there is a cavity inside the pumpkin.
Add baking soda to the pumpkin’s cavity.
If using food coloring, add the food coloring.
Pour vinegar over the baking soda and watch the eruption.
We do love pumpkins here in Autismland as evidenced by our Great Pumpkin tradition. This has quickly become a fun family tradition for the month of October even as they have become teenagers. Easy to do, easy to find everything you need and frugal too. What more could you ask for?
