Every Wednesday and Friday, Logan and I drive to therapy , specifically occupational and physical therapy. We talk and laugh and listen to praise music. All in all, it is a nice time. I really treasure these drives as I get to spend one on one time with Logan and get to know him a little better. He never ceases to amaze me!
This morning, he was talking about Star Wars (as usual) and I was pretending to listen. Sometimes, I will let him perservate on Star Wars for a little while. I learn things here too. I learn his favorite characters and what he wants next (always good to know when it comes present time). All of a sudden , I got a brilliant idea. I know , that’s an amazing feat in itself! lol
I remembered during our January consultation with our RDI consultant that we are working on the objective of increasing you partner’s enthusiasm for a desired task. (RDI is broken down into objectives that you work on one or two at a time. These objectives are broken into stages kinda like age and each stage or objective builds upon a previous one). She suggested that we make an exaggerated noise or sigh so that Logan looks at us to see that we are disinterested.
Today, I sighed loudly during the Star Wars talk. He looked at me like what’s up? I then said I’m bored and I don’t really like Star Wars. He smiled at me then achieved the goal. He said, OK, do you want to look at Pokemon instead? Woohoo! He wanted to continue to interact with me so he decided that he needed to do something to increase my enthusiasm. I spotlighted his success by agreeing to look at a couple Pokemon. I was driving after all. lol
Something that I could have done better was to sigh loudly then look puzzled at him. If he didn’t get that then I could have scaffolded some more with the verbal I’m bored. I jumped right to the verbal when he may not have needed it (told you that I talk too much!). I also need to remember to enthusiastically respond when he changes the topic or activity. This will make him feel competent and give him a positive episodic memory of doing it. All together, I think with some continued practice, Logan will have met this goal. God is good all the time!!!!
