I bet you know how to treat a scrape or scratch that your child gets from playing outside. You probably know just what to do if your other half get a bruise from work as well, but do you know what to do if someone in your family suffers from a hearing or ear health issue? Probably not, but you can find out by reading my post below.
Cleaning your ears isn’t always a good idea
While you may think keeping your family’s ears as clean as possible is the right thing to do for their hearing health, this isn’t always the case. In fact, any methods of cleaning the ear, and more dangerously the ear canal can cause hearing health issues.
For example, overzealous cleaning can result in wax being impacted in the ear canal which can lead not only to pain but also to hearing loss. In fact, it is also possible to rupture the eardrum by using cue top to clean the ear, something that can be extremely painful and problematic too.
Listen out for hearing health issues
One thing that you can do to help your family’s hearing health stay as good as possible is to educate them on the signs of common problems including swimmers’ ear, infections, and even tinnitus.
Remember too that sometimes issues in other parts of the body can show up in the ears. In particular, the first sign of a gum and tooth abscesses may be an earache, and just like any other ear-related issue should definitely not be ignored!
Of course, now there are treatments for such issues including hearing aids for tinnitus, as well as antibiotics that can be administered for infections. Something that can help get your family’s ear health back to normal in the fastest time possible.
Wear ear protection when necessary
Many families enjoy live music and other activities that can get loud. The problem, here is that sometimes we don’t have any control over how many decibels the music or noise will get to, and if it gets too high, it can cause permanent damage to delicate or very young ears.
With that in mind, it is well worth investing in some ear protection for your kids, or for your partner if they are in a situation that regularly exposes them to consistently loud noise.
It can even be helpful to find child safe headphones for when the kids listen to music or play video games at home. Then you can control how high they have the volume, and you will know that you are doing everything you can to protect their hearing health.
Believe it or not, smoking tobacco isn’t just bad for your lungs and heart, but can also have a direct effect on your hearing health as well.
In fact, there is a scientifically proven link between hearing deterioration and regular consumption of tobacco products, meaning that, if you want your family to have the best hearing health possible you need to give up smoking in the home, and encourage them to do the same!
