Gun Control and Kids

Gun control is being thrown around in the media frequently.

It is brought up whenever there is a violent crime or a mass shooting. It’s brought up whenever a terrorist does something terrible in our country. The strange thing is that it doesn’t seem to come up when a police officer makes a poor decision and ends up shooting an unarmed, innocent person. I find this more than a little bit sickening. And ironic.

Our media would disarm the country if it could, and our current government continues to feed the frenzy by bringing gun control back to the polls whenever it can. The media however, will also be the first to cry foul, “But that’s not what they said would happen!”(That is if the First Amendment is still on the books after they take away the Second).

Study your history just a little and you’ll find that governments who have succeeded in disarming their citizens have without exception become harsh and stronger than the voters ever intended, extending ultimate control over their citizenry.

Gun control is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The current gun laws are more than sufficient to keep guns out of the hands of mentally unstable people and felons. That part has already been established and pass into law. The measures currently being pushed will do no more to keep guns out of the hands of determined criminal types than what we already have on the books. Criminals don’t go through background checks. They don’t apply for concealed weapons permits. They buy their guns on the street, cheap, through whatever means they deem necessary to get their weapon of choice. There is no way to prevent that.

But what about the children?

Gun control– which actually means gun safety— begins at home. It begins with teaching kids to respect the weapon, never play with it or point it at a person, always clean it after use, store ammo separately, and lock it for storage. Gun free zones aren’t gun-free just because someone put signs up. The signs succeed at only one thing: Ensuring that if someone does want to come in and do harm, they are guaranteed not to come up against someone who will be able to stop them.

If you don’t want your kids around guns, don’t keep one- but that doesn’t remove your responsibility to teach your kids gun safety.

You– not the government– MUST teach safe and responsible behavior around weapons. Every child should know how to disarm a gun. They must be able to tell at a glance if that safety is on or off. They need to understand how to behave in the vicinity of something that has the potential to end their life. Gun safety– not gun control– means being a responsible parent and teaching your child about guns. You don’t have to ever buy one or even shoot one to teach your child to be smart around them. Tragedy can strike when kids aren’t taught proper behavior with weapons AND with police.

If, on the other hand, you don’t mind them learning how to shoot, then let them shoot targets with a BB gun or take them out to play paintball or Airsoft. Good clean family fun! Giving up our right to bear arms will never be an option.

Teach your kids responsibility and weapons safety.
