How To Make Rainbow Rice For Your Sensory Bins

Sensory bins are an important part of a sensory tool kit. You don’t need to spend a fortune on the colored rice that goes in them though. It’s really easy to make at home.

I’m going to share 2 different ways to do it. One lasts a bit longer than the other but both are easy.

How To Make Rainbow Rice

Ingredients For Each Color Rainbow Rice

• 1 cup rice 
• ½ teaspoon water
• 10 to 15 drops liquid food coloring

Instructions For Each Color Rainbow Rice

1. Place rice in a zip top freezer bag.
2. To the rice, add the food coloring and water.
3. Seal the bag and shake until the color is evenly distributed.
4. Dump the rice on to a baking sheet covered in wax paper or aluminum foil (for easier clean up and to avoid any staining.) 
5. Allow the rice to dry completely before playing or storing.

Alternative Way To Make Rainbow Rice

Items Needed:

• Zipper seal bags
• Hand sanitizer
• Uncooked white rice
• Food coloring
• Paper plates, paper towels, or an old cookie sheet

Directions to making rainbow rice:

1. Place ½ cup of uncooked white rice in a zipper seal bag.
2. Add a quarter sized squirt of hand sanitizer into the zipper seal bag.
3. Add 4 to 5 drops of food coloring to the zipper seal bag.
4. Release the air from the bag. To do this, you can simple close the bag most of the way and push the air out before sealing the rest of the way.
5. Shake, squeeze, or roll around the sealed bag. The kids will love to help with this. Shake the rice, sanitizer and food coloring around until the grains of rice are coated.
6. Dump the contents of the bag onto a paper towel, paper plate or old cookie sheet and allow to dry. This takes about an hour.
7. Repeat to make the colors of the rainbow.
