Not a Kodak moment.
A light bulb moment.
What is a light bulb moment?
A light bulb moment is when you have an epiphany of sorts. You know, when a light bulb goes off and you finally get it. Sometimes, it’s a problem that you have been trying to figure out or sometimes, it’s an easier way to do something. Mine was the latter.
I was doing my chores on Saturday afternoon. All was going well and the house was looking spiffy (Nana can attest to the spiffiness as she made a surprise visit). The children were playing in their rooms and watching tv.
Now, I have all my daily chores listed on index cards. Everyday, I go through the pile of index cards grabbing one or two out and getting that job done when I can. It’s a system that works for me.
I grabbed an index card that read : take out recycling
Here’s the light bulb moment: It occurred to me that my children could do that chore! Why am I not delegating the less essential chores to the children. Chores that they can easily do. Some chores they obviously aren’t going to be able to do like mopping the floor. But some are easily done by them.
So, I went through my index card pile and took out all the ones that I knew the children could do. More than half the pile.
This morning , I announced to them that every hour they needed to pull a chore out of the pile of index cards and complete it. Then they were to do one of their lessons. After the chore and lesson were completed then they had free time until the new hour started. If it took them the whole hour then they got no free time. Sounds pretty simple right?
All chores were completed before we left for gymnastics @ 6 PM. This was a great feat as we had to take Dad to work and deliver dinner to a couple at church so that had us out of the house from 3- 4:30.
Lessons took a bit longer and were completed at 8:30. Remember that we sleep late so we don’t get our morning started until very late. Some days it’s not even still morning by the time we get moving. lol
I also changed the tv/computer rule too so that may have had something to do with the drive to complete chores and lessons today. But that is another post altogether.
