I was on another blog when I saw this great idea. It was to pick a theme for your family for the year that spoke to the direction that you felt God was leading your family. (Sorry, I don’t remember where I saw the idea. If it was you then please let me know! ). This particular family had chosen service as their theme and was committed to doing 2010 acts of service this year.
What an awesome idea! I have been praying for a way to teach the children how to be the hands and feet of Jesus. I can preach it all day and all night but I needed a way to show them. It didn’t help that I needed to learn it as well. When I saw this idea, I immediately thanked God for revealing His answer to me. Don’t you love it when He talks directly to you!!!!!!!
So, as a family this year , we are going to do 2010 acts of service. We made this great poster. We also sat down and came up with a list of ideas of ways we could serve others. As we leave the house we start coming up with ideas to serve people while we are out. Some opportunities will present themselves to us. What we need to do is to be ready and willing to serve others with no thought to our own selfish needs or gain. We need to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
Right now, we are having to purposely think about it and talk about it. We have to make a conscious effort to be on the lookout for ideas and opportunities. My hope is that the more we talk about it and actually do it then the more it will become habit. At the end of the year, it will be second nature to our family. We will have learned to look for ways to serve automatically. We will listen to the Holy Spirit’s nudges and that still small voice that tells us what to do. We don’t need to understand the when or the why. We just need to be willing to do it.
Both children are thinking it right now. I have overheard both of them say to the other “Let m serve you!”. That totally warms my heart. One, they are learning the concept of service. Two, they are serving each other and forging a bond. A relationship has to grow stronger when both participants put the other person first. I could learn from them here. God is good all the time!
Also, I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I , Here I am; send me. Isaiah 6:8
