It’s all over the news. There is a measles outbreak at Disneyland. Of course it’s all because of those crazy , ignorant non vaxxers. Don’t know what a non vaxxer is? It’s a person who doesn’t vaccinate their children . There could be a variety of reasons for it. Your child could be immune suppressed , have cancer, or some other auto immune disease. You could be against it for religious reasons or after doing your research simply decided that you weren’t getting all of them for your child. There is a whole host of reasons for not getting your child vaccinated none of which involved a Hollywood celebrity or Jenny McCarthy who is always the first scapegoat brought up when arguments are made about vaccination choice.
I’m in the non vaxxer group. While I believe that vaccines have their place in modern medicine, I don’t believe that all of ones pushed on the public are necessary. In 1983, there were 24 vaccines on the schedule for children under 18. The 2015 schedule has 71 total vaccines with the majority of them happening in the first five years of a child’s life. Some of these are for disease of inconvenience like chicken pox or the flu, in my opinion. This years’ flu vaccine wasn’t even for the strains of flu that are present so the shot was completely worthless. American vaccines are overflowing with things like aluminum, formaldehyde, aborted fetal cells and all kinds of nasty toxins . Add in the fact that vaccine companies are exempt from being sued for adverse effects and it’s a bit too much of a gamble to take in my opinion. Let’s not mention that Merck , the company that makes the mmr vaccine, is in court over allegations from it’s own scientists that they mislead the government about the efficacy of their vaccine. Make no mistake. Vaccines are big business in this country.
But let’s talk measles. That is the current outbreak that has everyone calling for mandatory vaccination. Let’s start with what is measles? According to the CDC website, it is a rash of tiny red bumps often accompanied by high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. It is considered a respiratory disease so complications could include ear infections and diarrhea. In rare cases, pneumonia and encephalitis can occur. In the most extreme case as in 1 out of 1000 , death can occur. All that is from the Centers for Disease Control. The risk for actual death is something like .01% out of 1000 cases. I’m not a math whiz nor do I play one on this blog. There were 644 confirmed cases in the US last year according to Dr. Anthony Fauci from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease in Washington D.C. Now the CDC ‘s own statistics show that there have been no deaths from measles since 2003 but 116 deaths from affects of the MMR vaccine in that time.
I’m not hear to tote the evils of vaccines . I’m here to say that we live in America. Land of the free. The same freedom that allows people to protest a white cop shooting a black suspect gives me the choice to do the research to decide whether or not to vaccinate my own children. You did the research and decided the risk was worth it. I did the research and decided it was too dangerous for my child. No one has the right decision here. We are just parents trying to do what’s best for our children. The fact that we came to different conclusions doesn’t belittle either side. One outbreak shouldn’t meant that my side is wrong or that I need to conform to your side. One outbreak doesn’t mean that either side should panic. We are talking about a rash with a fever here. It’s not even as itchy as the chicken pox. How do I know that? Because my first child , who I didn’t know any better, got the vaccination twice. Once a week before his first birthday then again when he started school because it didn’t count considering he had it before his first birthday. Both times ended with him getting the measles. Both. He also got scarlet fever, rocky mountain spotted fever , the mumps, and chicken pox. All of which he received the vaccination. Notice that I didn’t mention he had autism too. Because when people hear that with vaccines, they immediately get defensive.
